About Prof Steven Kossard

Professor Kossard graduated in Medicine from Sydney University and gained his PhD at the Melanoma Unit under Professor Gerry Milton. He completed his training in clinical dermatology and dermatopathology at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney and the Mayo Clinic in the United States. In 1980, he established the Dermatopathology Unit at the Skin and Cancer Foundation Australia where he worked for 35 years as the Director of Dermatopathology. Professor Kossard has an extensive background in training dermatology registrars and pathologists and has been published in over 160 peer reviewed journals.

Professor Kossard has defined a number of internationally recognised concepts, including a nevoid form of melanoma in the elderly, a follicular pathway to skin cancer, subtypes of lymphocytic vasculitis and a distinct form of hair loss with frontal recession in older women. He is also the author of a popular GP series on clinical dermatology and dermoscopy for Medicine Today. Professor Kossard deploys his clinic’s advanced IT resources to lead teleconferences with dermatology and pathology registrars and other interested practitioners.
